Peace and Justice Project 2015-2016/ From Sketch to Cartoon
All around the globe students and scholars joint forces with our network of cartoonists to come to the essence of the conflicts the world is involved in and bring this essence to life in a single strong and striking image. This is key to understand what the root causes of these conflicts are and to come up with ways to solve them. The students we work with are the future thought leaders. They will shape the world. Through this projects they can start contributing right away.

Building Peace with the next generation of opinion leaders
This project set out to challenge the opinion leaders of tomorrow, to make them think about the importance of conflict resolution, justice, security and international law. We further challenged them to put their thoughts on paper not with words, but visually, by sketching an idea for a political cartoon. Images, and cartoons in particular, have the power to transcend borders, to provoke thought and to stimulate debate.
At participating schools and universities, workshops were organized featuring the Ambassador of the Netherlands and a local professional cartoonist from our network. The Ambassadors lectured about the process of peace-building and conflict resolution; the cartoonist taught the students about drawing powerful political cartoons.
Over the course of three years, the students produced countless sketches, inspiring hundreds of professional cartoons. These give a striking insight in the way of thinking of the future generation, handing sometimes unorthodox but achievable solutions to conflicts that current policy makers have proved unable to resolveGlobal expositions of the project: Peace and Justice
Between 2014-2016 students from around the world drew sketches depicting their ideas for cartoons that reflect their solutions for achieving peace. Our
network of professional cartoonists turned these ideas into striking
editorial cartoons. The best cartoons and the sketches they were based
on, were showed to the public at large in exhibitions.
They featured in high profile locations, like the the iconic Peace Palace in The Hague, several city councils, a High School in Kabul, the University of Sofia, Bulgaria and even the old University of Sint Petersburg in Russia.

Let’s make a book of editorial cartoons together with the next generation
The special project Kids & Cartoonists is a collaboration between 82 cartoonists and more than 300 students from five high schools throughout the Netherlands. Together, they came up with over 300 ideas for cartoons about the environment, water, energy and human rights. From these, 98 cartoons were selected for this cartoon book, which will be used in schools to teach about the Goals and about the value of editorial cartooning. All the cartoons that have been made for this project are published and shown in the newsroom of the publishcing platform Cartoon Movement. The project not only resulted in a beautiful book with some brilliant cartoons, but also in a commitment of Cartoon Movement to continue with these kinds of collaborations, with schools in the Netherlands, but also schools in other parts of the world.
